Typeslinger is a live one-on-one typing race for iPhone and Android, made by an independent developer (“the developer”, “we”). This page explains what the app collects, why, who can see it, and how to delete it.
In short: you play without an email, phone number, or password. We keep the name and country you choose, your race results, and how you typed each race. We use crash reports and basic usage statistics to fix and improve the app. There are no ads, we don't sell your data, and you can delete your account in the app at any time.
Who is responsible
The developer of Typeslinger is responsible for your data. For anything about privacy, including requests to see or delete your data, write to info@emsi.dev.
What we collect
Your account. The first time you open the app, it creates a guest account identified by a random ID. You then choose:
- a player name;
- a country. The app suggests one from your device's language and region settings; it doesn't use your location.
The app keeps your sign-in tokens on your device, in the iOS Keychain or in storage encrypted by the Android Keystore. Our server keeps only a one-way hash of them.
Saving your account with Google. If you choose to, you can save your account with your Google account, so you can sign in on another phone. Google tells us an ID for your Google account, which we keep with your account. We don't keep your email address, name or photo from Google.
Friends. If you use the Friends feature, we keep a friend code for you and the list of players you're friends with.
Notifications. To tell you about challenges and new friends, the app gives our server a push token from Firebase Cloud Messaging: a random ID that lets us send notifications to this install of the app. We keep it with your account until you delete the account or the token stops working. Whether notifications are shown is up to you, in your phone's settings.
Your races. For every race we keep:
- the result: win, loss, or draw, your time, speed, accuracy, and mistakes;
- the keystroke log: each character you typed in the race and when, counted from the start of the race;
- your opponent and the text you raced.
The race keyboard is active only during a race and records only what you type there. Nothing you type anywhere else, in the app or in other apps, is recorded.
From your races we work out your points, streak, league, achievements and medal, and a hidden skill rating that we use to find you fair opponents.
Technical data.
- When the app connects, it sends its version and whether it runs on iOS or Android.
- Our server uses your IP address for a short time to limit abuse, such as mass account creation. It isn't stored with your account.
- The server's logs record which requests were made and how they were answered. They are deleted as they are replaced by newer logs, within days.
Crash reports and usage statistics. The app uses two services from Google's Firebase:
- Firebase Crashlytics receives a report when the app crashes: where in the code it failed, your device model, operating system and app version, and a random installation ID.
- Google Analytics for Firebase receives basic usage events, such as a race started or finished, or a screen opened, with the same kind of device information and a random installation ID.
Neither collects your advertising ID, and they aren't used for advertising. We use them to find bugs and to see which parts of the game are used.
What we don't collect: your email, phone number, contacts, photos, location, or advertising ID. The app shows no ads.
Why we use it
- To run the game: your account, races, standings, leaderboards and achievements. That's the service you ask for when you play.
- To keep races fair: the keystroke log is how the server confirms your official time and checks that a race was typed by a person, key by key. A race that fails these checks counts as a loss, and the account is marked for review. Fair play is in the interest of every player.
- To keep the service working: crash reports, usage statistics and technical data, in our interest of fixing problems and improving the game.
Who can see it
- Other players see your name, country flag, league and medal when they race you. During a race they see your progress live; afterwards, your time, speed, accuracy and mistakes.
- Leaderboards show your name, country flag, league, medal and points to everyone, once you have finished onboarding and raced at least once.
- Your friends see your name, country flag, league and medal in their friends list. Anyone you send your invite link or friend code to can see your name and country flag on the invite page.
- Service providers process data for us and only on our instructions:
- OVHcloud hosts our server and database in Germany.
- Google (Firebase) processes crash reports and usage statistics. Google may process this data outside the EU, under the safeguards that EU law requires for such transfers.
- Google signs you in when you save your account with Google, or sign in with it on another phone.
- Google (Firebase Cloud Messaging) delivers notifications to your phone. Each one carries its text and which friend and challenge it's about.
- Backblaze will store encrypted backups of our database in the EU, once backups are switched on.
We don't sell your data or share it with anyone else, unless the law requires us to.
How long we keep it
- Your account and races are kept for as long as you have the account.
- Crash reports are kept by Firebase for 90 days, and usage statistics for at most 14 months.
- Server logs are kept for days, not months.
Deleting your account
In the app, open your profile (tap Stats on the main menu), scroll to the end, and tap Delete account. You can also write to info@emsi.dev with your player name and country, and we'll delete the account for you within 30 days; Delete your account has the steps.
Deletion is immediate and can't be undone. It removes:
- your name and country;
- your points, league, streak, rating, achievements and medal;
- the link to your Google account, if you saved the account with Google;
- your friend code, your friends list, and your challenges;
- your sign-in tokens and push tokens.
Your past races stay in your opponents' histories, but no longer linked to you or showing your name, so their records still add up. Your name becomes available to other players again. Copies in backups disappear as those backups expire, within 6 months.
A guest account lives on your device. If you lose the device or delete the app, you may lose access to the account, but its data stays on our server until you ask us to delete it.
Your rights
You can ask to see the data we hold about you, to correct it, to get a copy of it, to have it deleted, or to object to how we use it. You can change your name and country in the app yourself. For anything else, write to info@emsi.dev. If you think we handle your data wrongly, you can also complain to the data protection authority where you live.
Children
Typeslinger isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child under 13 has an account, write to us and we'll delete it.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top. For a significant change, we'll also tell you in the app.
